From the Heart to the hands: Dolce&Gabbana at ICA Miami

At Miami’s Design District, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami presents From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbana, an exhibition that foes far beyond fashion. Featuring more than 300 pieces, the exhibition becomes an immersive exploration of heritage, craftsmanship, material culture and spatial storytelling.

For interior designers, it also serves as a compelling reminder of how cultural narratives can transform a space into a meaningful experience.

When Design Begins with Culture

Curated by Florence Müller, with exhibition design by Agence Galuchat, the show unfolds as a journey through the creative universe of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Rather than presenting fashion as isolated objects, the exhibition constructs complete environments where architecture, craft, art, and memory coexist.

Italian culture forms the foundation of every room. Sicily, religious iconography, opera, folklore, architecture, and artisanal traditions are translated into immersive spaces that communicate identity through visual language.

This approach resonates strongly with contemporary interior design. The most memorable projects are rarely defined by furniture or finishes alone. They emerge when a space communicates a deeper narrative: one rooted in place, culture, and human experience.

The Power of Layered Storytelling

Walking through the exhibition feels like visiting a museum and more like moving though a sequence of carefully curated interiors.

Renaissance references, Baroque opulence, Byzantine ornamentation, and classical mythology are not simply displayed; they are spatially interpreted. Materials, color palettes, textures, lighting, and scenographic elements work together to create atmosphere.

For interior designers, this offers an important lesson: great spaces are built through layers of meaning.

Just as Dolce&Gabbana draw from centuries of cultural influence, hospitality, residential, and commercial projects can benefit from incorporating artistic and historical references that enrich the emotional dimension of a space.

Art becomes a bridge between concept and experience.

Fashion, Art, and Space in Dialogue

One of the exhibition’s most compelling aspects is the dialogue established between fashion and contemporary art.

Works by artists including Quayola, Alberto Maria Colombo, Obvious, Vittorio Bonapace, and Felice Limosani, appear alongside Dolce&Gabbana’s work, fostering a dialogue between craftsmanship, technology, tradition, and experimentation.

This curatorial strategy feels particularly relevant to interior design today.

Increasingly, designers are moving beyond selecting artwork as a final decorative element. Instead, art is becoming part of the design process itself: informing material choices, influencing color palettes, creating focal points, and shaping the identity of entire environments.

When art and design are considered together from the beginning, the result is more a cohesive and memorable experience.
