A Story of Curation: The Journey of Liliana Hernández-Obando
At The Art Dome, we believe in spotlighting the stories that shape and elevate our work. One such story belongs to our newest team member, Liliana Hernández-Obando—a curator whose journey across continents and cultural platforms reflects a deep commitment to art, collaboration, and community.
Liliana’s curatorial path began in 1997, when she joined the curatorial team for the City of Medellín Art Festival. That same year, she stepped into a pivotal role as Art Curator for the Museum of Art at the University of Antioquia, one of Colombia’s most prestigious institutions for art, culture, and science. She remained in this position for four years, leaving Medellín in 2000 to explore new creative horizons in the United States.
Her curatorial voice soon found expression at the Upcountry History Museum in Greenville, South Carolina, where she worked as a museographer for the exhibition The Silk Road. Beyond the museum setting, Liliana broadened her impact by curating the Latin American Art Show and coordinating the Latin American Hispanic Film Festival at Clemson University from 2005 to 2009—efforts that helped bring Latin American voices and aesthetics into academic and public conversations.
In 2010, she returned to Medellín to direct the Festival of Art & Performance, and in 2012, she founded her own space: Plecto Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo. Plecto was more than a gallery—it was a cultural lab for emerging artists and curators, a launchpad for independent projects, and a platform to amplify Medellín’s growing contemporary art scene. Under Liliana’s leadership, Plecto hosted major exhibitions and participated in significant art fairs, including ODEON, ARTBO, SAWB, PINTA among others.
Liliana’s work has always extended beyond her own projects. Between 2012 and 2016, she served as Curator and Consultant for the Contemporary Art Auction of the Santiago Corazón Foundation. In 2017, she was named Curator and Artistic Director of Art Medellín and the Medellín International Art Fair, solidifying her role as a cultural leader in the region.
Over the years, Liliana has moved fluidly between Colombia and the United States, maintaining strong ties to both the Medellín and Miami art scenes. Most recently, she directed and curated the award-winning documentary series B de Volumen (2022–2023) for TeleMedellín, honoring the life and legacy of Fernando Botero. The series received national recognition and was selected for competition at INPUT 2024, the prestigious International Public Television forum.
We are proud to welcome Liliana to The Art Dome and excited for the experience, vision, and creative energy she brings as we expand our curatorial and cultural endeavors.
