In his work, the word is the bearer of a poetic and universal language, where abstraction stands as a point of reflection on ethics and the role of the artist in society, exploring the tension between what is said and silence. The abstract then becomes a subversive attitude, a gesture to think and synthesize life and history through words.
Jose Angel appropriates the word “Sedición” (Sedition) in reference to Decree-Law 370, approved by the Cuban government in 2019 which criminalizes “the dissemination on social networks of information contrary to the public interest, morals, good customs and the integrity of persons”. This law, which allows the imprisonment of those who criticize the system and its rulers, is popularly known as the “gag law”.
Some of the work exhibited is the result of his artist residency in Colombia with The Art Dome and MAP.
