Leonel Matheu

Born in Havana, Cuba, in the year 1967, I currently reside and practice my craft in the vibrant locales of Miami and Los Angeles. My artistic journey has been significantly shaped by a distinctive style that marries elements drawn from my educational background and my extensive experience as a visual artist.

Employing a figurative graphic lexicon, I employ my artistry to convey a diverse array of narratives that, upon contemplation, lead the viewer to extract profound lessons from the tales I weave.

Over the course of more than two decades, I have exhibited my creations in a wide array of distinguished art galleries, international art fairs, and esteemed art institutions. My artistic explorations have taken me across the United States and overseas to countries including Japan, China, Korea, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Aruba, Chile, and Argentina.

My oeuvre finds a place of honor in the public collections of various esteemed art museums. Notable among these institutions are the MOCA-Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami Beach, The Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami, The Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens, The Mobile Museum of Art in Alabama, The University Art Museum at Radford University, Virginia, and Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Velez-Malaga, Spain, to name a few. Furthermore, my artistry extends its influence through interactive installations at the CultureScapes Gallery in the Young at Art Museum (YAA) of Broward County in Davie.

My creative footprint also graces public spaces in the United States through Art in Public Places initiatives. These include installations at The Miami Lyric Theater lobby, The Jackson South Community Hospital (Interior/ Wayfinding System) as an integral part of the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places collection, the "Vessel" Sculpture situated in the City of Hialeah, and "Pedestriart" at Miami Midtown Park. On an international scale, my work finds resonance at Comuna de Vitacura in Santiago de Chile.

Esteemed voices in the realm of art have articulated their thoughts on my creations. Carol Damian, Director of the Frost Art Museum, has described my work as "...Popular imagery and compositions that resemble a puzzle interact to give birth to smart and sophisticated commentaries about the human condition. In flat and systematic dispositions of abstract and pictographic forms, Matheu builds his own urban landscapes in which strangers run and hide."

Marisol Martell, writing for Art Nexus Magazine, eloquently noted that "the apparent simplicity of Leonel Matheu's proposal is surprising since it makes us face a subject that we no longer wait to hear about. He makes us conscious, for a moment, of those daily things around us with which we are so used to share our lives without even realizing it."

Throughout my illustrious career, I have been honored with numerous awards and accolades. Noteworthy among these are the Chivas Regal Order of Distinction in recognition of my artistic journey in the year 2000, and The Medal of Culture bestowed upon me in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In 2001, I received an honorable mention from the Secretary of The State of Florida in recognition of my contributions to elevate Florida as a State of the Arts. Additionally, in 2007, I garnered acclaim as the recipient of SEETAL 2007, 5th Edition in the Category of Photography-Mixed Media Painting at Kunst Forum International of Switzerland.

My creative endeavors serve as a philosophical exploration, delving into a series of events as manifestations of the human experience. These events unfold within a world that I, as an artist, transform into fables whose language is eloquently supported by imagery. My graphic expressions manifest through various mediums, and their interaction with the spectator is designed to enable a free and open interpretation of my narratives.
