Arno Rafael Minkkinen, born on the 4th of June, 1945, is a prominent Finnish-American photographer renowned for his remarkable body of work, primarily executed in the United States. His photographic artistry has garnered worldwide recognition and has left an indelible mark on the realm of fine art photography.

Minkkinen's artistic contributions have been showcased in esteemed collections, including those of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Finnish Museum of Photography, attesting to the enduring impact of his work.

The photographer's creative journey is punctuated by the publication of seven solo monographs, each a testament to his artistic evolution. These monographs include "Frostbite" (1978), "Waterline" (1994, recipient of the prestigious 25th Rencontres d'Arles Book Prize), "Body Land" (1999), "SAGA: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen, 35 Years of Photographs" (2005), "Homework: The Finnish Photographs" (2008), "Swimming in the Air" (2009), and "Balanced Equation" (2010). Notably, the retrospective survey "SAGA" made its debut at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, in 2005, subsequently embarking on an international tour, captivating audiences in Romania, Slovakia, Finland, Italy, China, and Canada.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of art and culture, Arno Rafael Minkkinen received the prestigious distinction of being named a Knight of the Order of the Lion of Finland of the first class by the Finnish government in 1992. Further affirming his legacy, he was honored with the Finnish State Art Prize in Photography in 2006.

Throughout his illustrious career spanning four decades, Minkkinen has worn various hats, engaging as a teacher, curator, and accomplished writer. Concurrently, he has consistently dedicated his creative energies to the genre of self-portraiture.

In recent years, beginning in 2009, Minkkinen has ventured into the realms of feature filmmaking and screenwriting. His notable work, "The Rain House," garnered support from the Finnish Film Foundation in 2010. This compelling screenplay, written and directed by Minkkinen, was conceived with the intention of being filmed in Finnish Karelia and Finntown, Brooklyn. A demo preview of "The Rain House" was screened at the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, in conjunction with the Dance Films Association's 41st Dance on Camera Festival in 2013. As of 2021, this cinematic endeavor continues to evolve, poised to further enrich Minkkinen's multifaceted artistic journey.
